Wii U to get digital download games

Wii-U1Nintendo is actively moving digital. After recently announcing that New Super Mario Bros. 2 for the 3DS will be sold as a downloadable title, the Kyoto-based game company also revealed that the Wii U will also have downloadable games as well—the Nintendo-published games, at least.

The digital Wii U games can be downloaded through Nintendo’s eShop service. But alas, you still have to purchase the download codes from a retail store, which defeats the convenience of buying online, or through an online vendor.

Buy Mass Effect 3 for 50% off at Amazon

Mass-Effect-3-shooting1If you haven’t purchased your copy of Mass Effect 3 for one reason or another, like you’re concerned about the ending or you’re just short on cash, then great news.

You can buy Mass Effect 3 at half the price in Amazon. Yes, it’s now worth $29.99 for all platforms (i.e. Xbox 360, PS3 and PC). Remember, it’s called “Deal of the Day” for a reason.

Oh, and if you’re still on the fence because of all the negativity about the ending, fret not. The free Extended Cut that Bioware plans to release this summer will add cinematic sequences and epilogue scenes, so maybe the ending won’t be that bad when you do finish Mass Effect 3.

The Witcher 2 trailer shows changes to Xbox 360 port

In the history of multiplatform games, ports have sometimes been met with some skepticism. If the game was originally for the consoles and was ported to the PC, its developers were sometimes accused of not considering PC controls. If the game is a PC title and was ported to the consoles, it would be called “watered down”.

The first developer diary for The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings on the Xbox 360, CD Projekt Red (embedded below) has revealed that the console conversion is being treated differently. Changes include a rewritten renderer for improved performance, new controls, improved camera and new content. See for yourself.

Does this new The Witcher 2 trailer get you excited, or are you still on the fence? We’d love to know what you think.

Max Payne 3 release date announced

Max Payne 3Would the real Max Payne 3 release date please stand up? During its earnings report, Take-Two Interactive announced that Max Payne 3 will be launched on the Xbox 360 and PS3 on May 15, 2012. The Max Payne 3 PC release date is scheduled on May 29, a couple of weeks later. These are for North America.

The Max Payne 3 release date for countries outside North America is June 1, although it’s not clear if this encompasses all formats. While Take-Two has finally provided a specific Max Payne 3 release date, there is no absolute assurance that there would be no more delays.

After all, Max Payne 3 was originally scheduled for a March 2012 release, but was postponed.

What the California video game law could mean to gamers everywhere

Postal-21It all began in 2005 when California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill that banned the sale or rental of “violent video games” to minors, effectively treating it like pornography. According to the bill, “violent video games” are games “in which the range of options available to a player includes killing, maiming, dismembering, or sexually assaulting an image of a human being”. Retailers that do not comply with this directive would have to pay a fine of $1,000.

The legislation was struck down as unconstitutional more than once before it took effect. The dispute was pushed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Last November 2, the oral arguments in the case were heard. If you reside outside the United States, then you probably think this issue doesn’t concern you.

Think again. The approval of this legislation has far-reaching effects that could possibly stretch beyond America’s borders.

Diablo III coming to consoles?

When asked a couple of years ago if Blizzard would bring Diablo III to consoles, lead designer Jay Wilson said the company didn’t have any plans. Twenty-nine months and millions of consoles sold later, it appears that things have changed. According to the Diablo III community site, Blizzard is looking into bringing the wildly popular action RPG to presumably the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

We’re exploring a Diablo-related concept for consoles and are currently looking to fill a few senior console-related positions on the Diablo III team. As we’ve said in the past, with proper care the gameplay could suit the console platform, and we’re interested in seeing what talent out there might be interested in such a project.

However, there is a disclaimer: this is not an announcement of a console version for Diablo III. Blizzard said it is developing the game primarily for Windows and Mac computers.

Considering that Diablo III is expected to arrive in the “next few years” on Windows and Mac, there’s no point getting too excited over a possible console version, which is likely to be released at a much later date. Nevertheless, it’s reassuring to know that a console edition is being mulled over.

Make it happen, Blizzard.
